Digital Media

Today I work primarily with photographs as my raw material.  The digital constructions that emerge are made up of many bits and pieces of photographic material. The excitement of working digitally comes from the freedom it affords. Experimentation is integral to a process that allows me to manipulate and recombine elements in a myriad of ways. Creating digitally holds the same fascination for me that molding clay afforded years ago. Both have an element of surprise and unpredictability. Both can be molded in an endless number of ways to produce a synergy that is both controlled and unexpected.

As the custodians of our planet, our job is to nurture, and care for its health just as it transforms and heals us. We have forgotten this reciprocal bond, and we treat our dearest friend as an enemy.

As the effects of climate change loom larger and larger, Nature has upended our complacency through an avalanche of extremes. But Nature is resilient, adaptable and mutable. It will survive and bring forth an entirely new landscape of possibility but the question remains whether we as a species will be here to witness it.

Vancouver has a spectacular mix of landscapes. Hiking through rain forest from North Marine Drive to the coast brings one to a rocky beach area flanked by wild grasses, streams and drifting logs. Looking East from there, the eye crosses the Georgia Straight and lands on the urban tangle of high rises that make up the city..

From Here to Mondrian addresses the feeling of dissolution as we navigate the obstacle course imposed on our lives by the pandemic. Our private selves are rich in nuance and feeling but once we enter the public realm, our public selves become shapeless and undefined.

We become abstractions of ourselves as we navigate the public domain masked, distanced and seemingly impenetrable. As a society, we place great value on the unique characteristics of every individual, but without the visual cues that inform us, individuality slides into the conformity of repeating lines and colours.

CHOSEN considers the relationship between human and divine. It questions the significance of being a chosen person or people. Is being chosen a privilege or a responsibility? How do chosen people view their commitment to serving God when it might involve personal hardship and suffering. Along with the belief that one belongs to a chosen group, comes a surrender to something higher than oneself, and an acceptance that one’s destiny belongs to a higher power.

Suffer the Little Children personifies Nature turning it into an angry and vengeful presence whose patience has run out, replaced by uncontrollable fury.

The victims are the children, who in their innocence, put their trust in us to protect them.

Esther is a woman that I met in Uganda. She had just had her hair done and when I complimented her, she threw her head back and laughed. I snapped the photo and it perfectly captures not only her beauty but the vivid colors of Uganda. I blurred the clothesline and revealed the motorcycle to distinguish its importance from the rest of the background.

I go to Hornby Island every year and it never gets old. The rock formations, the light, the colours, the wild life all inspire me time after time. I love it in the winter when the island has few people and the beaches are deserted. On this particular day at Heron Rocks, I had fun photographing my shadow against the rocks.

Sword Fern is one of the most beautiful and magical trails in the park. Deep into the trail, there is a tree stump covered in very bright moss with this semicircular piece of wood protruding from it. The tree looks like a castle and the piece of wood like a little shrine sitting in the tree. I represented the ‘castle’ at the top of the piece.
